Proc - Tom Greene Memorial Proclamation PROCLAMATION Whereas, Thomas W. Greene served the citizens of the City of North Augusta as a member of City Council for fourteen years and then led the City as Mayor for an additional twelve years from 1985 until 1997; and, Whereas, he was a man of vision - a dreamer - who saw the best in what his community could be; and, Whereas, as a result of Mayor Greene’s leadership A new Community Center was built; City entrances were improved at the James U. Jackson Memorial Bridge, Martintown Road, and John L. Hixon Bridge at I-20; Land from an abandoned railroad right-of-way was purchased and developed for the Greeneway walking, jogging, bicycle trail; The City’s automated garbage collection system was established; The Material Recovery Facility, the City’s recycling system, was designed; The Riverview Park Activities Center was built; The riverfront development program was successfully launched; and, Whereas, following his retirement, Mayor Greene continued to offer visionary guidance by forming the non-profit non-government organization, North Augusta 2000, now known as North Augusta Forward, to implement a broad based strategic plan for the community and then served in the leadership role as Chairman until 2014; and, Whereas, during forty-eight years of service to the City of North Augusta, Mayor Greene’s integrity and honesty shaped our community’s values and made us who we are today. Now, therefore, I, Briton S. Williams, on behalf of the grateful citizens of the City of North Augusta do hereby respectfully honor the memory of Thomas W. Greene for his service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the City of North Augusta and her citizens.
