PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Celebration of Aiken Barnwell Mental Health Center's 50th Anniversary
will be held on July 15, 2015 at Aiken Barnwell Mental Health-Hartzog Center, North Augusta, South
Carolina; and
WHEREAS, 1 in 5 American Adults experience mental illness; and
WHEREAS, 1 in 5 American Children experience mental illness; and
WHEREAS, 44 million adults in the US experience mental illness; and
WHEREAS, 25,000 Adults in Aiken County experience mental illness; and
WHEREAS, mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the US for ages 15-
44; and
WHEREAS,persons with mental illness die decades earlier than the general population
mostly due to preventable medical conditions; and
WHEREAS, the economic cost of untreated mental illness is more than 100 billion
dollars each year in the United States;and
WHEREAS, Aiken Barnwell Mental Health Center is one of the many organizations
dedicated to supporting the recovery of families, adults and children living in Aiken and Barnwell
Counties; and
WHEREAS,prevention works, treatment is effective, and people recover.
Now, therefore, I, Lark W. Jones, Mayor of the City of North Augusta, South Carolina do
hereby designate July 15, 2015, as:
Aiken Barnwell Mental Health Center 50 Years of Treatment Prevention and Recovery Day
in the City of North Augusta, South Carolina and do ask all citizens to participate in the celebration of this
day. I encourage all South Carolinians to learn more about mental illness and what they can do to
support individuals with mental illness and their families.
