PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, recreational boating is fun and enjoyable, and North Augusta is
fortunate to have sufficient resources to accommodate a wide variety of pleasure boating
demands.
However, our waterways can become crowded at times and be a place of chaos
and confusion and can be a risky sport if caution is not exercised. Not knowing or obeying the
Navigation Rules, drinking alcohol or using drugs while operating a boat, or failing to wear a
life jacket are all examples of human error or a lack of proper judgment that can costs lives;
and
WHEREAS, on average, 700 people die each year in boating-related accidents
in the U.S.; approximately 71% of these are fatalities caused by drowning; and
WHEREAS, the vast majority of these accidents are caused by human error or
poor judgment and not by the boat, equipment, or environmental factors; and
WHEREAS, a significant number of boaters who lose their lives by drowning
each year would be alive today had they worn their life jackets and followed basic rules of
water safety.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lark W. Jones, Mayor of the City of North Augusta,
South Carolina do hereby proclaim May 16-22, 2015, as:
National Safe Boating Week
in the City of North Augusta, South Carolina and do ask all citizens to support the goals of the
North American Safe Boating Campaign and the start of the year-round effort to promote the
wearing of life jackets and safe boating. I also urge all those who boat to promote theWear It!
campaign and practice safe boating habits.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of
the City of North Augusta, South Carolina, to be affixed this 11th day of May, 2015.
